Referendum Campaign Costs 2016.May-Aug

In 2016.May the "Let's send message to Brussels, so that even they understand!" campaign* (text in Hungarian: “Üzenjünk Brüsszelnek, hogy ők is megértsék!”) by the Hungarian government started with 1.200 'giant' billboards**.
see picture of billboard along a main street
After a lot of calculations by our financial specialists (as you understand afterwards calculating always takes more time than just tranferring the taxpayers money), the following figures can be given:

The costs of the campaign in May alone 1,35 million EUR (404 million HUF) for TV and radio commercials and newspaper and billboard advertisments.
From May.20 till 31 a grand total of 2.201 TV spots were broadcasted, these spots were shown on all major commercial and public TV channels***.
The campaingn continued the following months, costs as follows for 2016.June total 1,47 million EUR (440 million HUF) and for 2016.July total 2,15 million EUR (645 million HUF)
In August 1.700 'citylight' boards and almost 4.800 'orias' billboards** (contents see post 'Referendom Billboards') were ordered by the government, the printing costs alone 73 thousand EUR (22 million HUF).

* this information campaign, executed by our Hungary loving people, was necessary to "inform every Hungarian citizen about the referendum and the most important risks associated with mandatory relocation." (quote from statement from our Cabinet Office of the Prime Minister****).
** 'giant' billboards ('óriásplakát' in Hungarian) size ca.5,0 x 2,4 mtr (so size ca.2/3 of a football goal), these boards are located along main roads in cities and villages, along highways and inside public transport stations
*** all TV stations except RTL Klub and HIR TV, they did't want and/or weren't asked to show
**** by some ill-meaning people called 'Propaganda Ministerium'.

Budapest Bomber Suspect Arrested

After almost 4 weeks of hard investigations the Hungarian Counter Terrorism Center (Hungarian abbreviation TEK) has arrested a Hungarian man suspected of executing the bombing in the center of Budapest on 2016.Sep.24, on a nice saturday evening just a week before the very much anticipated referendum.
The arrest happened in a small lovely village near the beautiful Lake Balaton. For public information the special TEK forces made a video, which can be watched here.

Prime-Minister Viktor Orbán on 2016.Jul.26, in a press conference more than 2 months before the referendum, has informed all Hungarians that:
"Every Single Migrant Poses a Public Security and Terror Risk."
In the light of the bombers arrest and following the thought of the prime-minister we unfortunately have to acknowledge the following:
"Every Single Hungarian Poses a Public Security Risk as Potential Bomber."

Hungary Media Freedom

Press Statement

2016 October 20
Mark C. Toner - Deputy Department Spokesperson - Washington, DC

The United States shares the concerns of global press freedom advocates, international organizations, and Hungarian citizens, over the steady decline of media freedom in Hungary.
We are following closely the reported ban of an independent website from the parliament building on October 19 and the sudden closure of Hungary’s largest independent newspaper, Nepszabadsag, on October 8. The loss of this paper - regardless of the reason - is a blow to media pluralism in Hungary.
As a friend and ally, we encourage the Hungarian government to ensure an open media environment that exposes citizens to a diversity of viewpoints and opinions, a key component of our shared democratic values. We urge Hungary to work closely with the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media and other experts towards this end.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó has given an interview for the BBC World Service program 'Hardtalk'.

Introduction to the interview from BBC online:
"Brexit isn't the only threat to the coherence of the European Union. Think about Hungary for a second. The populist Government of Victor Orban rejected the EU's agreed response to the external migration challenge. The prime minister held a referendum in a bid to assert Hungary's right to ignore EU rules. Other EU member states have accused Hungary of threatening the Unions future. Hardtalk’s Stephen Sackur speaks to Hungarian foreign minister, Péter Szijjártó. Why won’t Hungary play by Europe’s rules?"

Here, on BBC on line, you can listen to it (till 2016.Nov.19)

PS: when not available anymore on BBC on line, we'll try to make it listenable here!
